The D Company

I wanted to write something about the recent Greg-Ganguly controversy and also at the same time wanted to think about an aspect to the controversy that hasn’t been written about. It was definitely a challenge. The relationship between Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sourav Ganguly is just like the relationship between Sourav and someone like Bhajji. Dada’s father Chandi Ganguly’s close friend Dalmiya Uncle has always been a pillar of strength in Sourav’s career and probably that is one of the many reasons why Ganguly has led Indian cricket team for such a along time. And Sourav has done the same for Bhajji. He stood by him during his slump and his much-publicized indiscipline at the National Cricket Academy when he was 19. Again, Ganguly and Bhajji have the same kind of attitude towards the game. They are both aggressive, possess tweaking tongues and have a history of rebellion. No wonder, Bhajji was the only person to defend Dada publicly. But the problem with such relationships is that over a period of time, one tends to nurture strong biases towards their wards even though they are not performing to the best of their abilities. And unfortunately that bias is lengthening Sourav’s tenure as captain.
